The World Series began with a bang tonight as the Phillies beat the Rays 3-2. The major storylines are Tampa’s rise from worst to first and the Phillies breaking through to the big show. Another equally major storyline is the resurgence of young highly talented African Americans in baseball with players like Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Howard, BJ Upton, and rookie phenom David Price.
Bill Shaikin of the LA times wrote a great article today about this storyline and it’s worth the read, twice over.
Yesterday, the Urban Youth Academy was visited by a Claudia Gomez from myFox 29 in Philadelphia. She was gleaming information regarding the proposed Urban Youth Academy in Philadelphia. Ms. Gomez interviewed several people from the Academy including Kenny Landreaux and Darrell Miller. “See you on the diamond”
On Sunday, The Urban Youth Academy was invited to participate in the Honda Family Fun Experience at California State University, Dominguez Hills. Our coaches and staff came with equipment and smiles to run different stations at the Honda Family Fun Experience. There was Station #1 – Infielding , Station #2 – Baserunning, Station #3 – Outfielding, and Station #4 – Hitting. These stations allowed experienced baseball and softball youths to learn as well as those who had never considered playing baseball a chance to enjoy the great game. We even had Darrell Miller, the Director of the Academy and Kenny “KT” Landreaux take the main stage at the experience to give a few hitting demostrations. Two young lucky fans got the chance to get up on stage and recieve personal instruction from Darrell and KT.
To all those who came to the Honda Family Fun Experience enjoy the the splendor of the national game, we here at the Urban Youth Academy want to thank everyone for coming out and participating. Baseball is a great game, but it needs these youngsters to fall in love with it like we did to continue baseball’s growth and prosperity.
As it happens, I stumbled upon a great blog entry that adds a little personal perspective to the USA Baseball N.T.I. Series that occurred at the Academy over the weekend.
