Today, over a hundred kids from The Young Scholars Program visited the Urban Youth Academy. The Program is an after-school enrichment program that helps young boys in the fifth and sixth grades by providing them with mentors, speakers and field trips, strategies for resolving conflicts, and generally helping them stay focused on doing well in school.
The program has been in effect for years throughout the Compton School District. The kids had a lot of fun! Compton Police Officer and Urban Youth Academy Instructor, Lorenzo Gray, lead the program by talking to the kids about the Academy and introducing them to the different instructional programs we offer for kids in their age range.
Coach Lorenzo introduced Kenny Landreaux a Former Major Leaguer with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Academy Hitting Coach. Kenny spoke to the kids about the importance of staying in school. The kids also received pep talks from Academy Instructors and Minor Leaguers, Marques Williams, Marvin Lowrance and Andrew Toussaint.
They were also treated to a demonstration of baseball skills by players from Compton Community College.
We would like to thank everyone involved in the program for bringing the kids to the Academy. It was a treat to have them visit us. Enjoy the pictures.
Simpson to Concordia
San Pedro softball player Bryana Simpson will sign a national letter of intent with Concordia University, an NAIA school in Irvine, on Dec. 5 in a signing ceremony at the Urban Youth Academy in Compton.
Simpson, a speedy outfielder, also had offers from Marist and Howard University, but decided on Concordia because of the small-school Christian atmosphere and the fact it is considered an NAIA power.
“It was so close to home and I loved it,” Simpson said. “It’s a Christian school, everyone was so nice there and I felt really safe there. I liked the small community. It felt homey.”
Simpson will be the first softball player from the Urban Youth Academy to sign a college scholarship.
