Major League Baseball: Urban Youth Academy – Compton Celebrates National Athletic Training Month (NATM)

MLB UYA NATA EVA_JEN

Meet: Jennifer Hernandez, ATC (pictured right)
Hometown: Lake Balboa, CA
Degrees/Educational Background: Bachelor’s of Science in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Athletic Training from California State University, Northridge, class of 2008 and later this year I am completing my Master’s of Science in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Sports Medicine and Sports Injury Studies from California State Univeristy, Long Beach.
Favorite Sport: Baseball
Favorite Team: New York Yankees
Why I Love Sports Medicine: “Helping the athletes get back to playing the sport they love and helping them stay safe and healthy; it’s very rewarding. It’s always fun to be around the athletes, to joke, laugh and have a good time when they are injured and unable to play or participate. I am always supporting the athletes and remind them to keep a positive attitude. As the athletic trainer, I always have the best seat in the house in the dugout right next to the athletes. Growing up playing sports I was always injured and did not have access to an athletic trainer. I lost a lot of playing time because I was injured and did not have anyone to correctly diagnose my injuries and help me rehabilitate to get back in the game. It wasn’t until my senior year of high school that I learned about athletic trainers and what they do. It was then that I decided to become an athletic trainer to help athletes never have to experience what I did without an athletic trainer. Many schools are still without athletic trainers.
Fun Facts: “I am currently working on my graduate thesis at CSULB studying elbow stresses in high school pitchers. I am hoping to use this study/data to help further prevent injuries in high school athletes and educate athletes, coaches, and parents. I am also serving as liaison for the MLB UYA Pitch Smart and Play Sun Smart initiatives, trying to spread the word and educate the parents, coaches, and athletes of the MLB UYA.

Meet: Evamarie Balderas, Sports Medicine Student Aide (pictured left)
Hometown: Visalia, CA
Degrees/Educational Background: Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Athletic Training from California State Univeristy, Long Beach.
Favorite Sport: Baseball
Favorite Team: San Francisco Giants
Why I Love Sports Medicine: “Initially I started out pursuing a registered nursing program, until I took an internship with my mentor Dennis Goebel, MA, ATC. He saw that I was excelling during my internship and made the suggestion that I go into sports medicine. Soon after I transferred into a sports medicine program and quickly developed a passion for studying pitching and throwing mechanics. I’ve always loved the sport of baseball, since I was young, so being an integral part of the athletic training staff at the Urban Youth Academy is the perfect concoction of sports medicine and baseball.”
Fun Facts: “When I was younger, I played the violin, bass, and drums. I was a member of the jazz band in high school – we recorded two CDs, so technically I’m a recording artist. Additionally, I am a dog and cat mom – my dog’s name is Beans and my cat’s name is Mr. White. They’re the best of friends and love to snuggle together.
