Please remember beginning next week, Tuesday 06/14/2016, BASEBALL open workout times will change.

  • Tuesday 06/14 – Infield Defense Open Workout (Ages 9 to 17 ONLY)
    • 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Wednesday 06/15 – Pitching & Catching Defense Workout (Ages 9 to 17 ONLY)
    • 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Thursday 06/16 – Outfield Defense Workout (Ages 9 to 17 ONLY)
    • 3 p.m. to 5  p.m.

Also, beginning the week of Tuesday 06/21/2016, baseball open workout times will change again as most Academy members should be on summer break.

Maya De Sota Named May’s Urban Youth Academy Member of the Month

Editor’s Note: Started January 2016, Academy Member of the Month is awarded to Urban Youth Academy members for their commitment to success both on and off the field. Through the splendor of the National Pastime, Major League Baseball founded the Urban Youth Academy in 2006. Aimed at setting the standard for baseball and softball instruction, mentorship, vocational programs and education assistance in urban America, the Urban Youth Academy also set out to enhance the quality of life in the surrounding communities.

JUNE 2016 Baseball & Softball Open Workout Schedules and New Information

Academy Members, Family & Friends,

The workout schedules for June 2016 are now available. Please read carefully to make yourself aware of any new changes.

Due to the significant increase in game play this summer on all of our fields with the 2016 Dodgers RBI season and Academy Barons summer collegiate team, there will be a decrease in baseball AND softball open development workouts. There will be some changes in workout times.

Please arrive 20 to 30 minutes prior to scheduled workout times to sign in and prepare to begin on-time. Wear appropriate baseball/softball attire and regular non-spiked athletic shoes. Helmet use required for Hitting Instruction. Spikes not allowed in batting cages. Beginning July 1st, 2016, members arriving late may not be allowed to participate in workouts.

  • Sunday & Monday – CLOSED
  • Tuesday – 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.

  • Friday & Saturday – 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

REMINDER: Always check our BLOG before heading to the Academy to make sure there are no last-minute changes or cancellations of scheduled workouts.

 

SOFTBALL

Please read the following details regarding this opportunity:

It is our pleasure to announce the 2016 BET Experience Youth Program returns for its fourth year. We invite your high school students to apply for this amazing opportunity.

The BET Experience at L.A. LIVE is a four-day festival (June 22-26) filled with music and comedy concerts taking place at Club Nokia and STAPLES Center; “106 & PARK”, the FREE BET Fan Fest at the Los Angeles Convention Center that features seminars, celebrity basketball games, celebrity meet & greets and other special appearances.

The BET Youth Experience (June 24-26) is designed to educate local high school students on the various aspects of the music and entertainment industry. Selected students will spend three days at L.A. LIVE learning about careers in music and entertainment including event production, marketing, artist management. They will also receive professional advice on personal and career development. The program is capped off by attending the BET Awards at the Microsoft Theater on June 26.

Eligibility

AEG and BET encourage all interested and qualified students to apply for the BET Experience Youth Program. Please read below for qualification requirements:

– Reside in Los Angeles County

– Did not participate in the 2013, 2014 or 2015 program

– Demonstrate a strong interest in music and/or entertainment

– Written response to the following: (1) Please share why you want to be selected to participate in this program. (2) What inspires you? (3) How has music impacted you?

– Upload a video or send a video link of you showcasing your talent, or a self-interview video discussing why you want to be selected (max. 2 minutes)

– Upload a letter of recommendation from a non-family member (i.e. teacher, coach, instructor, pastor)

Volunteer baseball coaches needed for the summer

Good afternoon,

We are looking for volunteer coaches to help coach the summer Dodgers RBI (Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities) league at the Urban Youth Academy youth in Compton. All games will be played in Compton. 

*All coaches will need to pass a background check. *

We will be hosting a coaches meeting this Thursday May 12th from 7pm to 8pm at the Urban Youth Academy. Located on the El Camino College Compton Center Campus , 901 E. Artesia Blvd. Compton, CA 90221.

Academy Members, Friends and Families,

Please be advised that El Camino College Compton Center will be holding their commencement ceremony this Thursday, May 12th, 2016 at 5:30 p.m.

For members attending workouts scheduled for Thursday, May 12th, 2016, please be aware that access to the campus, including the Academy, may be different from normal. Please feel free to share this information with fellow members who may also be attending workouts that day.

Parking that day will be FREE as mentioned on their website. Click on the links below for more information.

Ample FREE parking is available in all parking lots.  For this event, the Campus Police and the Parking Committee are waiving the usual parking fee. Please do NOT park in the Red Zones.

Once registered online, $25 per registration must be paid at the Academy office during office hours, NO LATER THAN 3 p.m., Saturday, May 07, 2016, by cash, check or credit/debit card. Additional information will be sent via email upon completion of online registration and payment. Academy Membership is required to participate in Dodgers RBI.
