The top players from the California Collegiate League were showcased in the 2009 CCL All-Star Game on Monday afternoon. All-stars were representing five teams in the CCL--the Academy Barons, Conejo Oaks, San Luis Obispo Rattlers, Santa Barbara Foresters and the Santa Maria Valley Packers. In addition, players from two non-CCL teams competed--the San Luis Obispo Blues and the Southern California Black Sox.
Over 60 players converged at the Urban Youth Academy to compete in this year's event. The event consisted of two parts, a prospect showcase and a nine-inning all-star game. Professional scouts were on hand to evaluate the top position players and pitchers through a series of drills to exhibit their skills. After, the players were assembled into two teams for the all-star game, which was taped by Fox Sports West. The game will be telecasted on July 20, immediately following the Angels-Kansas game and will repeat later in the summer at times to be determined.
The game and showcase was valuable for professional baseball scouts and college recruiters as they start their annual scouting cycle. It's also interesting to watch players make the transition from metal bat seasons of college baseball into the wood bat professional game. The event was a great opportunity for players, coaches, scouts, families and friends to watch the top collegiate baseball players in the country.
The Academy Barons were represented by Jarred Frierson, Dimitri De La Fuente, Joe Spizzirri, Shuhei Fujiya, Geoffrey Broussard, Daxton Sanchez, Ryan Thorton and Jarrett Maloy. Academy Barons coaches George Hinshaw, Kelvin Delgado and Vinny Lopez were on the coaching staff. Darrell Miller, Senior Director of the MLB Urban Youth Academy, threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
