Academy Barons-Final Home Game of Season

Thumbnail image for IMG_1927.jpgThe Academy Barons entered their final home game of the season on Wednesday night when they faced off against the Los Angeles Thrashers. The Academy Barons’ Braulio Archer sang the National Anthem on Fan Appreciation Night.

It was the second game of a two-game series against the Thrashers. The Barons defeated the Thrashers on Tuesday night as their record moved to 9-20.

The Barons completed their second year in the California Collegiate League. The season was successful and a learning experience for many of the players. The season also saw four Academy Barons get drafted in the 2009 MLB First-Year Player Draft.

Most of the current Barons players will continue playing baseball at their college in hopes of being drafted in next year’s MLB draft, while some may return to the Barons next summer.

Breakthrough Series July 20-23

The 2009 Breakthrough Series was held at the Urban Youth Academy from July 20-23.  Eighty high school baseball players from all over the country converged to participate in the second annual event. The players were divided into four teams and played games against each other while Major League Baseball scouts and college recruiters evaluated the athletes.

During Monday’s festivities, Frank Robinson, Tommy Davis and Reggie Smith came out to talk to the ballplayers to give them some advice and words of wisdom.

The event was put on by Major League Baseball and USA Baseball in order to give the top high school talent some extra exposure.
