The Academy Barons entered their final home game of the season on Wednesday night when they faced off against the Los Angeles Thrashers. The Academy Barons’ Braulio Archer sang the National Anthem on Fan Appreciation Night.
It was the second game of a two-game series against the Thrashers. The Barons defeated the Thrashers on Tuesday night as their record moved to 9-20.
The Barons completed their second year in the California Collegiate League. The season was successful and a learning experience for many of the players. The season also saw four Academy Barons get drafted in the 2009 MLB First-Year Player Draft.
Most of the current Barons players will continue playing baseball at their college in hopes of being drafted in next year’s MLB draft, while some may return to the Barons next summer.
The 2009 Breakthrough Series was held at the Urban Youth Academy from July 20-23. Eighty high school baseball players from all over the country converged to participate in the second annual event. The players were divided into four teams and played games against each other while Major League Baseball scouts and college recruiters evaluated the athletes.
During Monday’s festivities, Frank Robinson, Tommy Davis and Reggie Smith came out to talk to the ballplayers to give them some advice and words of wisdom.
The event was put on by Major League Baseball and USA Baseball in order to give the top high school talent some extra exposure.

The Urban Youth Academy has been given a special privilege to take 100 kids to the Free Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association Legends for Youth Kids Clinic on July 28th, 2009 from 11am-1pm. All participants must be on the Academy by 8:45am.

Summer Baseball Camp for 7-12 year olds kicked off on Monday morning at the Urban Youth Academy. Over 60 kids converged for baseball camp which will continue through the end of the week.
On Monday and Tuesday, two trainers from Athletes Performance came out to lead stretching and agility drills for the first hour of camp. The next two hours consisted of 15-minute stations which included sliding, infield, throwing, batting cages, outfield and catching. The stations were led by Academy coaches and Academy Airmen baseball players.
Wednesday’s session will consist of stretching, drills and team organization. The kids will be split up into teams and will compete in games on Thursday and Friday.
