Three News Articles worth reading
At the Academy, we been so busy, that we haven’t had the time to pass on any good news articles worth taking a look at. So, to make up for lost time, here are three definitely worth reading.
On Newsweek.com, there is a great article about how the City of Compton has been steadily improving in almost all facets of civic life.

On Sports Illustrated.com, Pablo Torre wrote an article aptly ***led “how and (and Why) Athletes Go Broke”
Recession or no
recession, many NFL, NBA and Major League Baseball players have a
penchant for losing most or all of their money. It doesn’t matter how
much they make. And the ways they blow are strikingly similar.

And finally, but certainly not least the Compton Tartars, the collegiate baseball team for El Camino College, Compton Center made news in the Long Beach Press Telegram: http://www.presstelegram.com/moresports/ci_11937819?source=email

Kenny Lofton Visits the Academy!
Kenny Lofton visited the Urban Youth Academy on Sunday, March 15th, 2009 to talk to our kids about baseball, life, and education.
Mr. Lofton, a graduate of the University of Arizona, truly represents what it means to be a student athlete. Mr. Lofton never lost sight of what it meant to graduate college and made sure that no matter happened, he finished his degree. That was the message he imparted to all the young baseball and softball players that were in attendance. He also talked baseball shop, giving pointers and tips on baseball stealing, hitting, and how to approach big games.

Draft Report: Welcome back | MLB.com: News
Good Monday Morning!
The baseball draft season is in full swing as Jonathan Mayor at MLB.com picks some the top baseball talented projected to be in the 2009 June Draft. As he notes, five of the eight reports on players come from the February Urban Youth Academy Draft Showcase.
It was a pretty spectacular scene on that rainy February morning. The rain subsided in the early afternoon and the Academy staff did a fantastic job prepping the field.
So, if you want to know who those players were, please check out Jonathan’s blog here!
Enjoy your week!
- Darren
