College Workshop Announced for March 8th, 2009 at 10am

We are excited to announce another installment of the College Workshops hosted by Dr. Brandon Martin.

Sunday, March 8th, 2009 at 10am

El Camino College, Compton Center Student Lounge.

In a substantive workshop at the Urban
Youth Academy, Drs. Harrison and Comeaux will directly speak to the role of
schools, communities and popular culture  in shaping the lives of
student-athletes, particularly in regard to negotiating their dual role as both
‘student’ and ‘athlete.’ Given the contextual
complexity of this issue, Drs. Harrison and Comeaux will introduce an
innovative concept coined Scholar Baller, which will serve as a descriptive
framework for the workshop.  They will also share their experiences as scholars
and athletes in order to inform talented youth about the forces supporting and
the obstacles confronting their successes.  Special attention will be given to
the ways in which talented youth develop and nurture college-going identities,
establish meaningful relationships in the community, undertake leadership roles,
and ultimately become lifelong learners.  Furthermore, family and community
members play a critical role in the talent development of student-athletes.
Educational achievement competencies, “best practices” and networking skills
will be discussed that affirm a commitment to productive youth development and
family/community empowerment.

Please download the form for this information in a flier.

We look forward to having everyone attend to hear this great information.

Jackie Robinson Day

The youth from the Urban Youth Academy in Compton, CA were invited on Saturday to attend a very special celebration at the Stadium Club at Dodger Stadium.  Saturday would have been Jackie Robinson’s 90th Birthday and to help celebrate this special day, the staff of the Los Angeles Dodgers went above and beyond to host a spectacular event that all the kids will remember for the rest of their lives.

They were treated to classic Dodger Stadium fair including Dodger dogs, hamburgers, CrackerJacks and more desserts than one child could eat in a lifetime, but we all tried!

At the celebration was former teammate and roommate of Jackie Robinson, Hall of Famer Don Newcombe, Former Dodger great Tommy Davis, and Former Dodger great Sweet Lou Johnson.  Hosting the event was Dr. Charles Steinberg of the Los Angeles Dodgers who stressed that no matter who you are or where you come from, if you work hard and dedicate yourselves, you can do anything in the world. Here at the Urban Youth Academy, we live by that idea everyday and strive to give the youth here the confidence to go out there and pursue their dreams.

To read more about event please visit: Jackie Robinson Day
& to see a video about the event, please visit: Jackie Robinson Day Video.

Now, please enjoy some snapshots of the day’s events.
