Darrell Miller Still an Angel to Some – News Article

Tonight, while doing some research I found a great article from the Press Enterprise newspaper regarding the Urban Youth Academy from a little over a year ago.  It was article I’ve seen before, but it’s a nice reminder how lucky we are to be at the Urban Youth Academy.  As a pilot program, it has taken off beyond any expectations.  The RBI World Series (hosted by the UYA) wraps up for the young men tomorrow at Angel Stadium which serves as a reminder for all those seek solace within the confines of the Academy.  That one day a young man who arrives at the doorstep of the Academy has chance to learn from some of the best on the manicured fields might one day play on the pristine fields of Angels Stadium as a big leaguer.  Opportunities like these don’t come around everyday, except at the Urban Youth Academy.

Hall of Famer Dave Winfield visits the Urban Youth Academy

2008 RBI World Series - Day 4 - Dave Winfield 1When was the last time you met a Major League Baseball Hall of Famer?
Well pardner, that’s just too long.  Today, while the young men of the
2008 RBI World Series competed for the chance to play in the
championship game at Angel Stadium, Hall-of-Famer Dave Winfield visited
the Urban Youth Academy.  He met with players to offer words of advice
and encouragement.  The chance for these young men to meet such an
influential figure has the potential to pay huge dividends as they get
the opportunity to learn from one of game’s best.   Enjoy the
pictures.

2008 RBI World Series - Day 4 - 1st base tag-outIt’s playoff time!  The 2008 RBI World Series officially began the
playoff portion of the tournament today.  All teams participating in
the RBI World Series were seeded by their record from the round robin
portion of the tournament  Here are some pictures from some of the
games played at the Urban Youth Academy.

As these young men compete against the teams from around the nation, the hope of playing the championship game at Angel Stadium is palpable.  Players run faster, throw harder and give that last ounce of hustle needed to come out on top.  Should be exciting to watch!

2008 RBI World Series - Day 2 - Serving Lunch

At the Academy, we had opportunity to feed over four hundred people after the Workout Day.  This was a chance for players from around the United States and the Dominican Republic to socialize together in a very baseball friendly environment.  As the RBI World Series takes a breather for the day to allow the young men to workout with the experienced coaches of the Urban Youth Academy, it also an opportunity to meet new people and hopefully build bonds as these players make their way in their baseball careers.  Maybe, just maybe these young men will meet again at a major league ballpark in the new future.
